Cross River Bank Adds Ripple’s RLUSD To Its Payment Infrastructure
TL;DR: Cross River Bank announced an integration of Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin into its Core Operating System on October 15. The bank aims to give fintech customers access to blockchain settlement alongside conventional payment rails.
A US bank is adding a stablecoin to the machinery it uses to move money for fintech customers. Cross River Bank said on October 15 that it is integrating Ripple USD, or RLUSD, into its proprietary Core Operating System, with support for the XRP Ledger.
The idea is to make on-chain settlement another available route rather than an entirely separate payment product. Businesses connecting through Cross River’s platform could use stablecoin rails alongside familiar systems such as ACH, wire transfers and other bank payment services.
On the XRP Ledger, transactions are designed to settle in roughly three to five seconds at costs that can be a fraction of a cent. Those network characteristics help explain why Ripple is pitching RLUSD for cross-border payments, merchant settlement and treasury transfers that do not fit neatly into traditional banking hours.
There is an important gap between blockchain transaction speed and the full time required to deliver money to an end recipient. Compliance reviews, currency conversion and the off-ramp back into a bank account can all introduce additional steps.
For Cross River, which supplies financial infrastructure to other businesses, stablecoin support is part of a broader attempt to make different payment methods accessible through one integration. For Ripple, it gives RLUSD another path into regulated banking workflows.
Neither company described the deal as an overnight replacement for existing payment networks. The more realistic near-term picture is a bank adding another settlement tool, with actual adoption depending on which fintechs find it useful enough to integrate into their operations.
