Anthropic’s Claude now offers a unified memory system, syncing across chat and Cowork tools, with user-controlled settings for sensitive data.
Anthropic has unveiled a major update to its Claude AI assistant, introducing a unified memory system that spans both its chat interface and Cowork platform. Starting August 25, 2026, any information Claude remembers in one context—such as chat—will seamlessly carry over to Cowork tasks, and vice versa. This change aims to streamline workflows by reducing the need to repeat or re-explain details.
The memory system is designed to evolve as users interact with Claude, automatically updating information like project deadlines or personal preferences. Users also have full control over what Claude retains, with the ability to view, edit, or delete saved topics through Memory settings. Importantly, sensitive topics such as health, beliefs, or personal identifiers are excluded from memory by default, though users can opt in to include them if desired.
Why This Matters
Claude’s new feature addresses a common pain point for AI users: the lack of contextual continuity across different tools. For example, if a user discusses project priorities in chat, that context is now available when Cowork generates status reports or business review decks. Similarly, logistical data shared while brainstorming in chat can inform Cowork’s task execution, such as budget planning and scheduling for events.
This capability positions Claude as one of the most user-friendly AI assistants available, particularly for professionals managing complex, multi-faceted projects. The integration aligns with Anthropic’s broader mission to develop safer and more useful AI systems, a principle anchored in its Constitutional AI framework.
Privacy and User Control
Anthropic emphasizes transparency and user control with this update. All saved memories are organized into easily editable files under the “Topics” section in Memory settings. Users can correct outdated information—or delete it entirely—with changes reflected across all future interactions.
For those opting to enable memory for sensitive topics, Claude displays a notice each time such information is saved. However, certain data types—like Social Security numbers or criminal history—remain off-limits and cannot be stored under any circumstances. These safeguards underline Anthropic’s commitment to user safety and compliance with ethical guidelines.
Market Context
Anthropic’s latest product enhancement follows a recent surge in investment activity. The company closed a $65 billion Series H funding round in May 2026, pushing its post-money valuation to $965 billion. While Anthropic remains privately held and does not have publicly traded assets, this valuation underscores the significant market confidence in its AI offerings, including the Claude family of models.
The update to Claude’s memory system also comes on the heels of a broader push for AI transparency. On August 12, 2026, Anthropic announced plans to add machine-readable watermarks to all Claude-generated content, ensuring compliance with emerging EU regulations. These moves reinforce Anthropic’s position as a leader in ethical AI development.
How to Get Started
The unified memory system is now active across all Claude plans—Free, Pro, and Max—on web, desktop, and mobile platforms. For mobile users, updating to the latest version of the Claude app is required. Team and Enterprise users can access memory settings via their admins, though the feature is disabled by default for individual users in these plans.
To explore or customize Claude’s memory settings, users can visit Settings > Memory. With this update, Anthropic has made it easier than ever for AI to serve as a truly personalized assistant, cutting down on repetitive tasks while prioritizing user control and privacy.
