Avalanche introduces Gross Chain Product (GCP), a metric to track on-chain economic output, aiming to isolate real blockchain activity from token price volatility.
The Avalanche Foundation has unveiled Gross Chain Product (GCP), a new framework designed to measure economic activity across blockchain ecosystems. Drawing inspiration from traditional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) metrics, GCP aims to track the real economic output generated on-chain while separating it from the often extreme fluctuations in token prices. This distinction is critical in a sector where token values can swing dramatically within short timeframes, creating noise in existing metrics.
Currently applied to Avalanche’s C-Chain, the GCP methodology uses the income approach from national accounting to aggregate protocol-level revenue, expenses, and transaction fees into a single, economy-wide measure. It’s a significant step forward in addressing the limitations of prevailing metrics like Total Value Locked (TVL) or token market capitalization, which often fail to capture the nuances of genuine on-chain economic activity. For instance, TVL measures idle capital, while token market cap is heavily influenced by sentiment and speculation rather than actual productivity on-chain.

The need for a robust economic metric in blockchain ecosystems has long been apparent. In traditional finance, GDP serves as a reliable gauge for policymakers and investors to evaluate economic growth or contraction. - Mid-2025: A period of steady, broad-based growth followed, driven by expanded DeFi activity under stable macro conditions.
- Late 2025 to early 2026: A sharp contraction occurred, primarily within lending and decentralized exchange (DEX) categories, as falling collateral values reduced borrowing capacity and trading volumes.
Critically, GCP data shows that while nominal output plunged 60% from the January 2025 baseline, real GCP declined by only 25%, underscoring the resilience of on-chain activity despite falling token prices.
Implications for Broader Adoption
Beyond Avalanche, GCP could provide valuable insights for other blockchain ecosystems and stakeholders. By focusing on real economic output, the metric offers a clearer picture of whether an ecosystem is growing or contracting. For investors, this could inform more nuanced capital allocation strategies.
