In 2025, GitHub experienced unprecedented growth with a developer joining every second, as TypeScript became the most used language, driven by AI integration, according to GitHub’s Octoverse report.
GitHub’s latest Octoverse report reveals a year of extraordinary growth, with a new developer joining the platform every second in 2025. This expansion, the fastest in GitHub’s history, has brought the total number of developers to over 180 million. The surge is attributed to the increasing integration of AI in development processes and the rising popularity of typed languages, particularly TypeScript, which overtook Python and JavaScript to become the most used language on the platform.
AI and TypeScript’s Rise
TypeScript’s ascent to the top spot marks a significant shift in the software development landscape, as developers increasingly favor typed languages for their reliability in production environments. The language’s popularity is further bolstered by the adoption of AI tools, which benefit from TypeScript’s strict type systems. GitHub’s Copilot, an AI-powered coding assistant, has played a pivotal role in this transformation, with 80% of new developers using it within their first week on the platform.
The report highlights the influence of AI in reshaping development practices, not only in coding speed but also in language and tool selection. Generative AI has become a standard part of development, with over 1.1 million public repositories utilizing large language models, reflecting a 178% year-over-year growth.
Global Developer Growth
GitHub’s developer base is expanding globally, with India leading the charge by adding over 5 million developers this year alone. This accounts for more than 14% of all new accounts, positioning India to potentially become the largest source of GitHub developers by 2030. This growth is part of a broader trend, with regions like Brazil and Indonesia also experiencing significant increases in developer numbers due to burgeoning tech ecosystems and improved internet access.
Record Levels of Activity
In 2025, developers on GitHub created more than 230 new repositories every minute and merged an average of 43.2 million pull requests each month, representing a 23% increase from the previous year. The platform also saw nearly 1 billion commits, with August alone recording almost 100 million. This activity underscores the platform’s role as a central hub for software development and collaboration.
The Future of Development
Looking ahead, GitHub anticipates continued growth and diversification in its developer community, driven by the ongoing integration of AI and the increasing importance of typed languages. As AI tools and agentic workflows become more ingrained in everyday engineering, GitHub is poised to remain at the forefront of this technological evolution.
